Once the commercial real estate industry’s version of a novelty act, green building programs have become embedded in the DNA of a number of REITs. At these companies, eco-friendly best practices are now as much a part of the corporate culture as signing leases and collecting rent.

Part and parcel of that evolution has been the emergence of sustainability-minded professionals occupying positions dedicated to ensuring that their employers keep conservation in mind and pushing REITs to innovate.

REIT magazine recently spoke with six leading sustainability executives to find out more about how they got to where they are, what they are working on now, and the challenges ahead.
