NAREIT and Green Street Advisors jointly sponsored and hosted an industry seminar in Mexico City earlier this week. The goal was to provide information to Mexico’s investors on the key considerations impacting allocations to real estate securities. The event was organized as a series of presentations focusing on the role of REITs in institutional investor portfolios, best practices in the U.S. REIT industry, the growth and evolution of real estate investment structures in Mexico, and financial reporting and disclosure.

Calvin Schnure, NAREIT's senior vice president for research and economic analysis, discussed the role of REITs in institutional portfolios, describing the evolution of the U.S. pension and investment markets and drawing parallels to developments in Mexico. Representatives from law firm Hogan Lovells’ New York and Mexico City offices spoke on the topic of real estate investment structures and sponsored a networking reception following the close of the seminar. Dirk Aulabaugh and David De La Rosa of Green Street's Advisory & Consulting Group gave a presentation on industry best practices and disclosure and financial reporting.

Meanwhile, Meredith Despins, NAREIT's senior vice president for investment affairs and investor education, moderated a panel discussion among senior executives of three of Mexico’s publicly traded real estate companies, Fibra Uno (BMV: FUNO11), Fibra Terrafina and Vesta (BMV: Vesta). The interactive discussion provided an opportunity for seminar attendees to hear the companies’ perspectives on the outlook for Mexico’s real estate market, how the listed real estate market is positioned for growth, and insights into the opportunities and challenges across property sectors in Mexico’s real estate economy.

The event's targeted audience included Mexico’s institutional investors, regulators and market authorities. There were more than 70 attendees registered for the seminar, including Mexico’s pension fund managers, a delegation from one of the largest global sovereign wealth funds, several Mexican REITs and real estate companies, and other key constituents to the investment process in Mexico.
