REIT exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer a low-cost investment option for investors seeking exposure to REITs. REIT ETFs own baskets of REIT stocks, and like other ETFs, REIT ETFs are designed to mirror an underlying REIT index.

Investors can choose from both U.S. REIT ETFs and international REIT ETFs.

The iShares Dow Jones Real Estate Index Fund was launched in 2000, making it the first REIT ETF. There are now more than 20 REIT ETFs available on the market.
