On Oct. 4, Nareit Hawaii held a Mahalo Reception to honor five nonprofit organizations awarded grants by the Nareit Foundation in 2023 to support affordable housing projects.

Mahalo means “thank you” in the Hawaiian language, and expressing our gratitude to the Hawaii nonprofits and the tireless dedication of their employees to help those needing assistance was the event’s focus.

The five nonprofits awarded Nareit Foundation grants this year are Family Promise of Hawai‘i, Catholic Charities, Molokai Affordable Housing Alliance, Arc of Maui County, and PAL of Kauai.

Sixty guests attended the reception from Oahu and the neighbor islands to enjoy the fellowship and support of those who share in the belief that service, sacrifice, and goodwill are instrumental to a community’s well-being.

Nareit President and CEO Steve Wechsler thanked REITs for their support of the Nareit Foundation, while Nareit Hawaii Executive Director Gladys Quinto Marrone announced the five grant awardees and thanked nonprofit groups for constantly working to make lives better for families.

Alexander & Baldwin President and CEO Lance Parker presented remarks complimenting the work of nonprofits and how they strengthen communities statewide for all concerned, especially for those families coping with difficult situations.

Looking ahead to 2024, Marrone announced that the Nareit Foundation and Nareit Hawaii will focus their grant awards on supporting affordable housing projects in Lahaina and other Maui communities recovering from the tragic wildfires that destroyed hundreds of Maui homes.
