Representing real estate in 13 sectors—including offices, industrial, retail, lodging/resorts, residential, timberland, health care, self-storage, infrastructure, data centers, diversified, specialty, and mortgage—below are some of the resources and activities Nareit undertakes or provides on the industry’s behalf.
The Dividends Through Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DDEI) CEO Council leads the REIT industry’s efforts in advancing actionable and sustainable plans that support the recruitment, inclusion, development, and advancement of women, Black professionals, other people of color, ethnically diverse individuals, and members of other under-represented groups in REITs and the publicly traded real estate industry. The DDEI CEO Council is made up of 29 REIT CEOs, who collectively represent every segment of the REIT industry. The council is chaired by Thomas Baltimore of Park Hotels & Resorts, Inc., Debra Cafaro of Ventas, Inc., and A. William Stein of Digital Realty. All three are past chairs of Nareit.

Nareit’s Real Estate Sustainability Council (RESC) was created in October 2016 to help guide Nareit's ESG efforts and priorities. The RESC currently consists of more than 50 actively participating Nareit corporate member sustainability thought leaders – representing all REIT sectors – with a mission to help shape and lead the REIT Industry as it continues to address a variety of complex ESG issues. One to two employees of Nareit corporate members are welcome to represent their organizations as RESC members. Most RESC members hold sustainability titles, however, operations, public relations and investment relations professionals are also RESC members. This council focuses on issues relating to ESG issues. The RESC typically meets three times per year, in November, July and January (during Nareit’s ESG Forum). During RESC meetings, members discuss ESG priorities in the REIT industry, ESG reporting, sustainability trends, technologies and best practices. RESC members also receive relevant Nareit Alerts.

The Social Responsibility Council (SRC) is a cross-disciplinary group representing Nareit’s corporate membership. The SRC will advise Nareit regarding the broad range of social responsibility initiatives Nareit should undertake on the industry’s behalf and those that corporate members should consider. The SRC is co-chaired by Colleen McKeown, chief human resources officer at Prologis, Inc., and Carolyn Carter Singh, EVP, chief talent officer at Brixmor Property Group, Inc.; with Nareit SVP Nathaalie Carey serving as Nareit’s principal staff liaison.The SRC was established Nov. 2020 consistent with the recommendations of Nareit’s ESG Task Force to enhance industry awareness and encourage corporate reporting and activities related to social responsibility.

The Corporate Governance Council (CGC) builds and expands upon Nareit’s existing corporate governance programs to support Nareit’s corporate members. These efforts will include all the “G” issues in ESG and have in the past included Nareit’s strategic engagement with the SEC, Congress, and other market participants on a range of corporate governance issues of importance to REITs, including financial disclosure and proxy reform, among other things. The CGC is chaired by Troy McHenry, EVP, chief legal officer, and general counsel at Healthpeak Properties with Nareit SVP Victoria Rostow serving as Nareit’s principal staff liaison. The CGC was established Nov. 2020 consistent with the recommendations of Nareit’s ESG Task Force to enhance industry awareness and encourage reporting and activities related to corporate governance.

Nareit’s Dividends Through Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Initiative promotes recruitment, inclusion, and advancement of women and other diverse groups in REITs and the wider commercial real estate industry. As part of this effort, the initiative facilitates education and career development opportunities and promotes engagement programs for women and other diverse groups in the REIT and commercial real estate industries.
Nareit recognizes the achievements and contributions of its members and industry professionals through its annual awards. Nareit presents member companies with awards for sustainability efforts, DEI advancements, and communications with investors. Executives and industry professionals are recognized for their contributions to the industry.
Nareit is convening conversations on critical ESG topics to promote knowledge sharing across the industry. The events – online and in person – bring together key stakeholders across the REIT and publicly traded real estate community to discuss the ESG topics most impacting real estate.
