Jan. 14, 2011: Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) (center), Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, met with Dana Anderson, Vice Chairman (right), and Kenneth Gillett, Senior Vice President, Property Management (left), of Macerich, at his district office in Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Anderson and Mr. Gillett briefed Rep. Waxman and his staff on Macerich's presence in Santa Monica and across the country. In particular, they discussed Macerich's ambitious and highly successful renovation of the Santa Monica Center, as well as the direct and indirect contributions the company has made to the economy of Southern California. Mr. Anderson also thanked Rep. Waxman for his efforts to provide federal employee participants in the Thrift Savings Plan with the ability to diversify their portfolio to include an allocation to REITs. The group also discussed some of the obstacles facing REITs that seek to participate in federal incentives for investments in energy efficient building and retrofitting.

Jon Kyl (R-AZ) (right), Minority Whip in the United States Senate and a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, met with Dana Anderson, Vice Chairman, Macerich, at his state office in Phoenix, AZ. Mr. Anderson briefed Sen. Kyl and his staff on Macerich's presence in Arizona and the company's future development plans. In addition, Mr. Anderson and Sen. Kyl discussed several current REIT tax issues pending before Congress, including reform of the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act, or FIRPTA, and e-Fairness. Sen. Kyl expressed an interest in working with the industry on these issues next year during the 112th Congress.

Oct. 25, 2008: AvalonBay Communities partnered with USA Weekend to participate nationwide in Make a Difference Day which is a national day of service and volunteerism. In Alexandria, VA AvalonBay staff members partnered with Rebuilding Together Alexandria to renovate and rebuild homes in Alexandria, VA. The staff worked on seven homes, installing weather stripping and insulation of homes owned by low-income and elderly residents throughout Alexandria. Martin Mash (above) represented Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) at the kick-off to this event.

Oct. 25, 2008: At Avalon Court, in Melville, NY, residents and staff worked together to clean up a local beach, in order to improve the environment and to help save the endangered Piping Plover. The volunteers, staff, local officials and residents spent the day in rainy conditions clearing beach refuse.
