AccountAbility CEO Sunny Misser sat down for a video interview at Nareit’s offices to discuss how geopolitics, environmental issues, and technological advancements are reshaping the sustainability landscape.

Understanding these trends is essential for businesses seeking to navigate the complexities of sustainability and governance, Misser told Nareit’s Matt Bechard. As Misser highlighted, the implications of these dynamics extend beyond compliance; they represent a fundamental shift towards a more responsible and sustainable business model.

Key takeaways from the interview include:

  • Geopolitical events significantly impact economic stability, necessitating awareness among businesses. “Who says that geopolitics is not geoeconomics? It absolutely is,” Misser said.
  • Environmental challenges will lead to mass migration, posing social and operational challenges for organizations.
  • Technology, particularly AI, is revolutionizing how businesses approach compliance and governance, enhancing efficiency and reducing risks. “The next phase is not going to be the governance of AI, but it’s going to be more the governance by AI, and this poses a completely different set of challenges,” he said.

Misser also discussed how AI is becoming “the new ESG analyst,” taking over the first round of assessment and evaluation.  As technology continues to advance, it will play an increasingly crucial role in helping organizations meet their ESG commitments and adapt to changing regulatory environments, he noted.
