Nareit President and CEO Steve Wechsler and Senior Vice President of Industry Affairs and Strategic Initiatives Bonnie Gottlieb attended the semi-annual meeting of the Real Estate Equity Securitization Alliance (REESA) in Madrid, Spain, on Sept. 9. The all-day meeting focused on joint financial standards initiatives, ESG issues, proptech, and major projects being undertaken by each REESA member organization. Attendees included the chief executives or senior staff from:

  • Association of Real Estate Securitization (ARES) in Japan;
  • British Property Federation (BPF);
  • European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA);
  • Nareit;
  • Property Council of Australia (PCA); and
  • Real Property Association of Canada (REALPAC).

The group also spent time planning the first-of-its-kind REIT symposium to be held in October 2020 in London. This meeting, to be facilitated by REESA, with REIT CEOs, institutional REIT investors, and analysts, will include the heads of REIT associations as well as REIT and publicly traded REOC thought leaders from around the globe.

The REESA meeting was held in conjunction with EPRA’s Conference and 20th anniversary, which took place from Sept. 10-12 in Madrid. Keynote speakers included the head of Bloomberg Economics, the former Greek Minister of Finance, and the Goldman Sachs international non-executive chairman and former president of the European Commission, all of whom gave their views on the European economic outlook. Sessions also included REIT CEOs’ responses to socio-economic disruption, why tech matters, and the pros and cons of investing in public versus private real estate.
