In March, NAREIT’s Investor Outreach team met with a diverse group of 59 global investment organizations controlling more than $5.5 trillion in institutional investment assets. The meetings were held with organizations across all targeted investment cohorts, including 16 with U.S. and Latin American pension and endowment plans; two with investment consultants; 20 with investment managers; and 21 with organizations and associations active in supporting the global pension and retirement industry.

Approximately 10 percent of the capital invested in U.S. real estate comes from outside the country’s borders. While much of the capital entering the U.S. has been for direct property investment, investment in listed real estate is growing. According to a survey of global institutional investors published by Hodes & Weill, more than 50 percent of global institutions are invested in REITs and real estate securities. North American REITs are the preferred strategy for these investors. Further, analysis of data from Preqin and the S&P Money Market Directory suggests that more than 300 institutions outside the U.S. invest in listed REITs and real estate securities, including a number of the world’s largest investors.

NAREIT has also been active on the academic and institutional investment conference circuit during March, attending four events and participating as a speaker at one event.
