The U.S. REIT market expanded in the 12 months ended April 2017. At the end of April, the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index included 224 REITs with a combined equity market capitalization of $1.073 trillion, up from 219 REITs and $972 billion in equity market capitalization at the end of April 2016.

The FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index, the benchmark for the Equity REITs that make up the bulk of the U.S. REIT market, grew to $986.1 billion at the end of April 2017, up from $914 billion at the end of April 2016. The bulk of the U.S. REIT market is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and the equity market capitalization of NYSE traded REITs grew to $971.1 billion at the end of April 2017, up from $915 billion at the end of April 2016.

Growth in trading volume also tells the story of a growing listed REIT marketplace. Average daily dollar trading volume in April 2017 was $7.2 billion, up from $3.7 billion in April 2012 and $2.9 billion in April 2007.
