It takes a lot of real estate to make your cell phone, social media platforms and office network function. That real estate is increasingly owned by REITs. Cell tower REITs own approximately 80,000 towers in the United States, which are the backbone of the nation’s mobile communications network.  REITs lease space for transmission equipment on the towers to tenants, which are telecommunications companies. REITs also own 210 data centers in the U.S. These facilities house the server networks that enable the functioning of the nation’s social media sites, online retailers and financial services companies.
