Following industry outreach, EPA’s ENERGY STAR received full funding for the 2026 fiscal year, for the first time, with a specific appropriation of “$33,024,000 is to carry out the Energy Star Program.” The EPA continues to implement reorganization plans, with ENERGY STAR moving to the newly formed Office of Air and Radiation, which is responsible for national programs, policies, and regulations to control air pollution and radiation exposure.

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager (ESPM) remains a vital resource for building owners to navigate building performance regulation and reporting requirements, and manage energy costs and energy demand. In 2024, 94% of the top 100 REITs reported on energy consumption, and 68% reported owning ENERGY STAR certified buildings. Several REITs are among the first building owners to earn the ENERGY STAR NextGen certification, which recognize buildings that meet energy efficiency standards, utilize clean energy, and reduce onsite emissions.

The Department of Energy Better Buildings Program recently launched its 2025-26 Winter Webinars program showcasing the latest topics, technologies, and trends to support building owners and operators to save money, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency. The annual Better Building Summit will take place on May 11-13, 2026.
