Nareit joined several CRE associations, alongside consumer products, manufacturers, and retail sector representatives, in demonstrating support for the non-regulatory, public-private partnership ENERGY STAR program. In letters to EPA, DOE, and congressional appropriators, the coalition has expressed broad support for ENERGY STAR from across the economy.
The coalition strongly believes that energy efficiency in the built environment is key to achieving Administrator Zeldin’s pillars for “Powering the Great American Comeback” which include restoring American energy dominance and making the US the AI capital of the world. The ENERGY STAR for Commercial Buildings program provides building owners with tools and resources to benchmark, improve, and earn recognition for energy efficiency. In a preliminary step, funding for ENERGY STAR is included in the appropriations bills moving through Congress.
The program's flagship ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager (ESPM) platform provides a secure online platform for U.S. commercial building owners to measure their buildings’ energy use. The platform gives owners access to more than 100 metrics about a building's performance and energy costs. ENERGY STAR scores allow building owners to compare an asset’s performance to past consumption, similar buildings, or a reference performance level.
Nareit will continue to inform members about this valuable program and collaborate with a coalition of real estate industry advocates to communicate the benefits of federally backed energy data and investment planning tools provided through the ENERGY STAR program."
