Mortgage REIT returns outperformed Equity REITs and the broader equity market in the first quarter of 2017 according to the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). The FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index delivered a 10.82 percent total return in the first quarter, compared to a 2.55 percent gain for the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index, a 2.97 percent gain for the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index, which includes both Equity and Mortgage REITs, and a 6.07 percent gain for the S&P 500.

For the 12 months ended March 31, the total return of FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index was 30.57 percent compared to 5.25 percent for the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index, 6.30 percent for the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index and XX percent for the S&P 500.
