The U.S. REIT market outperformed the broader equity market in May and the first five months of the year, the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) reported. The FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index, the broadest measure of the U.S. REIT market including both Equity REITs and Mortgage REITs, delivered a total return of 2.34 percent in May and 6.53 percent for the year through May 31. The FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index gained 2.31 percent in May and 6.32 percent for the year; and the FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index was up 4.27 percent in May and 10.58 percent for the year.  In comparison, the S&P 500 gained 1.80 percent in May and 3.57 percent for the year.
