Kevin Hagen, director of corporate responsibility at Iron Mountain Inc. (NYSE: IRM), joined Nareit for a video interview at Nareit’s 2018 ESG Forum.

Hagen discussed the importance of collaboration on sustainability matters, both internally within the company and externally with tenants, vendors and outside organizations.

“Collaboration is a crux issue for sustainability,” according to Hagen. He stressed the importance of being “culturally agile” to negotiate sustainability issues across an organization.

Hyper-collaboration among organizations, meanwhile, allows a lot more to get done and on a much bigger scale, Hagen said.

Hagen also highlighted some of Iron Mountain’s recent ESG successes. The company received a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2018 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

In addition, Hagen said more than 40 percent of Iron Mountain’s electricity footprint in 2017 is likely to come from renewable sources. That compares with a level of less than 1 percent in 2015.
